What we know about Joe Gelhardt's Hull City contract as agreement reached to quit Leeds United

Joe Gelhardt is on the cusp of exiting Leeds United to return to Hull City.

The 24-year-old enjoyed two loan spells with the Tigers, who look to have won the race for his signature.

Gelhardt scored 15 Championship goals to help fire Hull back to the Premier League via the play-offs last season.

Signed as a prodigious teenager from Wigan Athletic back in 2020, Leeds had high hopes for Gelhardt at Elland Road.

However, he never proved he could consistently make an impact at Leeds, and there was an increasing inevitability he would be sold.

And now more details have emerged about Gelhardt's move to Hull, which should be completed imminently.

What do we know about Joe Gelhardt's Leeds United exit?

Hull's interest in a permanent deal for Gelhardt appeared to have cooled at one stage during the summer.

Indeed, that led to reports that other teams were ready to swoop in and make a move for the attacker to beat Hull to the punch.

Championship big spenders Wrexham and Birmingham City were both linked, while Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers were also mooted as an option.

However, Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic pushed the club to re-enter talks, and now things are moving at a pace.

The Hull Daily Mail has reported that the Tigers have now reached an agreement with Leeds for the transfer of Gelhardt.

They add that Gelhardt has agreed a four-year contract with Hull until 2030, with the option of an extra 12 months on top of that.

Provided there are no late hitches, he could now be in Hull's squad for their friendly encounter against Nice this weekend.

It just never worked for Gelhardt at Leeds

Leeds supporters always wanted the best for Gelhardt, and there will be a sense of goodwill over his exit.

It is a shame that things just did not work out for a player who looked like he could be a special talent at Elland Road.

With Leeds very much on the up and looking to add more quality reinforcement in attack, there just was not going to be a place for Gelhardt in the team anymore.

It still remains to be seen if he can cut it in the Premier League, but he deserves the chance to show he has the ability.

That opportunity was not going to happen at Leeds, so it is a move that makes complete sense for everyone involved.
