What pursuit of Zion Suzuki tells us as Leeds prepared to offer £25.8m to seal new transfer
Leeds United are said to be leading the race to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki this summer.
Suzuki, 23, represented Japan at the World Cup, where they have just been eliminated in the last 32 following a 2-1 defeat to Brazil.
The American-born shot-stopper has drawn plenty of interest this summer, and his performances at the World Cup have only seen his stock rise.
Leeds are seemingly in the market for goalkeeping reinforcement in the close season to bolster Daniel Farke's ranks between the sticks.
Suzuki kept five clean sheets in 20 Serie A performances last season, and made an average of 3.3 saves per 90 minutes.
And it looks like the Whites could be ready to put the final touches on a deal to bring Suzuki to the Premier League.
Leeds not ready to squander Zion Suzuki advantage
Leeds' goalkeeper department is one that might need some work in the coming weeks.
The signing of Lucas Perri from Lyon a year ago has not worked out as hope, and he quickly lost his place to Karl Darlow.
Darlow's own future has been in doubt, though it looks like he sign a new deal now, while Perri could be sold if the right offers come in.
Illan Meslier has also now left Elland Road, meaning Farke could be keen to another goalkeeper.
According to La TV Dello Sport journalist Gianluigi Longari, Leeds are leading the race for Suzuki and do not want to squander their advantage.
He adds that Leeds are prepared to go beyond £25.8million along with the bonuses demanded by Parma, though other clubs are monitoring the situation.
What does this tell us about Leeds' transfer plans?
Leeds are clearly in the market to add quality additions in the transfer window as they look to build on last season's 14th-place finish.
Harry Wilson has agreed a four-year deal to join on a free transfer, after his contract at Fulham expired.
Southampton midfielder Shea Charles is also on Leeds' radar, though they face competition from Crystal Palace, and Julian Brandt remains a target.
However, it is evidently clear that Farke wants more quality between the sticks. Darlow did a great job last season, and it is great news if he stays.
But Perri is clearly not trusted by Farke, and Leeds fans would shed few tears if he were to leave.
At 23, Suzuki is the right age and profile that Leeds should be targeting, and he could be a great addition this summer.
