Wages claim made amid Leeds United imminent £400k transfer for Karl Darlow
Leeds United may be paying Karl Darlow’s wages in full after reaching a bargain agreement to sign him from Newcastle, according to Alan Nixon.
Writing on his personal Twitter account (27 July), The Sun journalist was answering a question from a follower about the deal after it was revealed that the Whites will be paying just £400k to Newcastle despite talk of a £5m deal in recent weeks.
And Nixon responded by claiming that Leeds could be paying his wages in full rather than a payout coming out of Newcastle’s end of the transfer fee to get the deal done.

“I can only imagine Leeds are paying his wages in full,” he wrote. “Rather than a pay off coming out of the transfer fee at the Newcastle end.
“Many ways to skin a cat.”
Interesting
When news of the transfer fee dropped it did seem unbelievably low considering all the talks that had gone on in recent weeks.
Middlesbrough and Hull City reportedly walked away from the deal over the financial demands of it, and £400k isn’t a lot of money for Championship clubs looking to bolster their goalkeeper options.

So it seems as though wages may have been the bigger issue with Darlow not wanting to leave without getting paid what he’s owed, and now maybe Leeds took the plunge to be able to get it over the line ahead of Bournemouth.
By paying his wage in full we may be paying Premier League numbers in the Championship, but ultimately it seems to have been balanced out with the transfer fee and the plan is to get back to the top flight as soon as possible.
If Darlow can help us get there at the first attempt then it will look like excellent business all round, and the club clearly believe he’s the right man to go between the sticks. So now we just have to wait and see.
