Viktor Johansson to Leeds United claim issued amid Illan Meslier form
Carlton Palmer does not see Leeds United signing Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson in the summer.
He believes that Illan Meslier is too good to play second fiddle while the Sweden international will not want to be a number two either.
The 25-year-old won the Young Player of the Year award at Rotherham back in the 2020/21 season.
Palmer told Football League World on 1 May: “He has been the standout performer for Rotherham, despite their relegation, and Leeds are keen on him.
“The problem is however, Leeds already have a first choice keeper in the form of Illan Meslier, who is a current international too. If they were to go ahead with the purchase of Rotherham’s number one, then one of these two would have to miss out.
“I personally can’t believe that Johansson would settle for being a back-up to Meslier in that Leeds team after such a stellar season.
“The Swedish international deserves to, in fact, he will, be playing Championship football next season and simply won’t be doing that if he is sat on the bench.
“I don’t think it will be Leeds that go ahead and sign him unless they move Meslier on, but if they get promoted, I feel they should keep Meslier on as he has already proven to be a strong choice for the Premier League.”
Leeds United must consider upgrading on Illan Meslier
Meslier, a promising young goalkeeper, has yet to earn a full international cap for France.
Despite his potential, his performance has notably faltered since the turn of the year.
In contrast, Johansson has had a stellar season, even as his team faced relegation.
The Swede’s exceptional performance has caught the attention of Leeds United and a move to Elland Road makes sense.
Johansson’s impressive form, coupled with Meslier’s recent struggles, makes a compelling case for the Swede to be considered for the number one spot at Leeds.
Such a move would not only strengthen the team but also provide Meslier with the opportunity to regain his form or face healthy competition.

Given Johansson’s proven ability to perform at a high level, it is clear that he could be an asset to Leeds United.
