Victor Orta sells Leeds United to Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo
Victor Orta has managed to sell Leeds United to left-back Junior Firpo, who now wants to quit Barcelona to play for Marcelo Bielsa, according to ESPN.
The broadcaster claims Leeds and Barca remain locked in talks over how the deal will be structured with a loan-to-buy deal potentially on the cards.
Southampton, AC Milan and Inter Milan are also interested in signing Firpo but Leeds are said to be leading the race to sign him after Orta convinced him that Elland Road is the right place to move to.
Huge first step in transfer window
Leeds’ priority this summer was to sign a new left-back who can immediately become a regular name on Bielsa’s team sheet.
While we’re grateful for all the work Ezgjan Alioski has done for us in the last few years, the North Macedonian struggled for large periods of last season in the Premier League – simply because he’s not a proper left-back.
Firpo, on the other hand, is. And he’s a very good attack-minded one who should end up being a superb addition to Bielsa’s squad at Elland Road.
Last season, the Dominican left-back played just 18 times in all competitions for Barcelone as he struggled for game-time.
However, at his last club Real Betis, he became known for his attacking output from the left-back role and in 2018/19, he scored three goals and supplied five assists in 29 total appearances, playing a direct role in goals versus Barca and Real Madrid.
It remains to be seen how this deal will be structured and if we do have to agree a loan-to-buy transfer then so be it.
But Firpo is a major upgrade on what we already have and the squad will be in a far better place once this deal is complete.
