Victor Orta jets into Eindhoven to thrash out Leeds United talks for Cody Gakpo

Victor Orta is flying back to England alone after jetting out to Eindhoven on Wednesday night in a bid for Leeds United to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV, according to Rik Elfrink.

The Eindhovens Dagblad journalist reported via his personal Twitter account on Thursday morning (1 September) that Orta did jet into the Netherlands on Wednesday (31 August) but he’s been told by his sources at Eindhoven Aiport that Gakpo, 23, has not boarded the plane with him back to the UK.

Fabrizio Romano reported late on Wednesday that Leeds are leading Southampton in the race to sign the Netherlands international on deadline day.

Elfrink added in another tweet that Gakpo was booked in to board the private jet to the UK with Orta.

However, he’s been told by a source at Eindhoven Airport that he no-showed.

Doesn’t mean anything

Gakpo played for PSV against Volendam on Wednesday night so we doubt that he’ll be flying to the UK in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Dutch ace scored a wonderful hat-trick for PSV before being taken off just after the hour-mark and after that game, it’s likely that he returned home to get some good rest ahead of what is bound to be a big day for him.

Orta was more than likely in Eindhoven just for talks with the Dutch club about a last-minute deal for Gakpo because, as it stands, no deal has been agreed.

Leeds’ transfer chief may have also been in talks with Gakpo’s agent with the Netherlands international sharing the same SEG agency as the likes of Elland Road ace Mateusz Klich, Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer and Atalanta star Marten de Roon.

Has Orta been successful in whatever he did in Eindhoven? That remains to be seen but the fact he’s gone over there for a face-to-face negotiation says a lot about his willingness to get a deal done.

We really hope he’s done the business but the biggest credit in all of this goes to the Leeds fans on Twitter who spotted a private plane leaving Doncaster on Wednesday night for Eindhoven and was due to return to Leeds-Bradford on Thursday.

In other Leeds United news, we’ve been exclusively told how a Radrizzani agreement is blocking the 49ers from investing in the club.
