Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has rejected the chance to sign Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper claims that Ayala’s agent has approached the Leeds recruitment chief to see if he would be interested in taking on the soon-to-be free agent.
Ayala will play no further part in Middlesbrough’s Championship campaign after deciding that he will find a new club once his contract expires on June 30.
However, that new club will not be Leeds United as Orta has opted to turn down the 29-year-old Spanish defender.
We’re glad that Orta has taken that stance.
Although Ayala is a key player for Middlesbrough and the Teesside club are better with him than without him, he simply isn’t good enough for a club that is likely to be playing in the Premier League next season.
Ayala does have experience of playing in the top-flight but most that experience was earned when Middlesbrough were relegated.
Leeds are going to need a new centre-back or two ahead of next season because Ben White’s loan deal will expire and it’s unlikely that the club will be able to re-sign the impressive 22-year-old. Gaetano Berardi might also be on his way out when his contract runs out.
If Leeds want to prosper in the Premier League – or launch another Championship promotion bid if they fail this time – then they are going to need to sign defenders who are as good as, if not better, than those who are leaving.
Simply put, Ayala isn’t anywhere close to filling White’s boots and signing him would just be a waste of time.
Well done, Victor.
