Unnamed Premier League in pole position to sign Robin Koch, Leeds United set for £11m+ loss – Sky Sports

An unnamed Premier League club is in pole position to sign Leeds United defender Robin Koch, according to Sky Sports.

Florian Plettenberg reported via Sky Sports (21 June) that despite interest from the Bundesliga, a Premier League side currently leads the race for the German defender.

The 26-year-old has attracted interest from Bayer Leverkusen as a potential replacement for Jonathan Tah, and Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the Premier League club is in pole position, although Koch is yet to make a decision.

Following relegation to the Championship, Koch can leave Leeds for free due to a clause in his contract, which means the Whites are set to make an £11.5million loss on the player after they paid that fee to bring him from Freiburg to Elland Road just shy of three years ago, as reported by The Daily Mail (29 August 2020).

Double loss

This is a frustrating bit of news for Leeds United and fans of the club.

Not only do they look set to lose a first-team regular, but he is also set to make the move away for free which means the club will not be able to claw back any of the fee they paid for the player.

Koch had a particularly poor year last season and was part of the league’s worst defensive record however still looks set to get himself a move back to the division which he was just relegated from.

It remains to be seen which Premier League club is reportedly in pole position to secure the services of the 26-year-old and of course, Koch himself is yet to make a decision.

He may prefer a move back to his home country and a fresh challenge in the Bundesliga after he experienced such a horrible season last year in England’s top flight.

However, Premier League money may do the talking and Koch might be giving the league another crack next season after all.
