£20m+ release clause twist emerges for Tyler Adams exit from Leeds United

Leeds United are hoping to land more than £20million for Tyler Adams as talks continue with Bournemouth, according to Graham Smyth.

Adams, who saw a move to Chelsea collapse earlier this month, has now agreed personal terms with Bournemouth and is set to undergo a medical at the Vitality Stadium [Graeme Bailey].

However, while it had widely been reported the United States captain was available for £20m due to a release clause in his contract, Leeds claim that has since expired [The Athletic].

In an update posted on his personal Twitter account on Friday [18 August], Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Smyth said: “Leeds United still in talks with Bournemouth over Tyler Adams but expecting them to conclude with a sale.

“Leeds holding out for more than the release clause to get it done. They believe they’ll get a good fee.”

Race against time

Adams’ exit from Elland Road was inevitable, though the good news for Leeds is that it has taken so long for a club to push through a deal that they may now land a few extra million – enough to sign a more-than-decent player at Championship level.

Chelsea had come close to signing the American before deciding they would instead focus on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, with that interest perhaps putting other clubs off making an approach.

Leeds United

Bournemouth did finally make their interest know this week, but Leeds are adamant the release clause had expired at that point.

It now remains to be seen whether the clubs will quibble over a fee or if an agreement can swiftly be reached.

If Bournemouth refuse to offer more, and Leeds stand firm, Adams could be the biggest victim as he will remain in the Championship for at least the next four months.

In other Leeds United news, one player could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an injury.
