Tottenham transfer news as Leeds United make Djed Spence approach

Leeds United have approached Tottenham Hotspur over a season-long loan for Djed Spence, according to Phil Hay.

The Athletic journalist reported on Monday (28 August) that the Whites have more than one full-back on their radar after Sam Byram picked up an injury against Ipswich and an enquiry has been made over the potential availability of Spence.

The 23-year-old isn’t a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, having struggled to make an impact since making the permanent switch from Middlesbrough last season, only making four appearances in the Premier League before spending the second half of the campaign on loan with Rennes in Ligue 1.

Daniel Farke’s side are hopeful of signing the former Nottingham Forest man this summer, having already carried out one deal with Spurs earlier in the window with Joe Rodon also joining the ranks at Elland Road on loan this summer.

Interesting prospect

Spence is more than capable of being an outstanding full-back at Premier League level, let alone in the Championship and he showed just how good he could be in his last spell in the second tier with Forest in the 2021/22 campaign.

Admittedly, he has struggled at Spurs and had issues with Neil Warnock when the pair worked together at Middlesbrough with Warnock being more than underwhelmed with the defender’s attitude and application.

Farke has said that he wants a united squad this season, with everyone at Elland Road pulling in the same direction as United aims to return to the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether or not Spence would be invested in helping the Whites on that journey.

There was a feeling that while with Forest, Spence enjoyed proving those who doubted him wrong and with so many writing him off at Tottenham already a loan move to one of if not the biggest clubs in the Championship would be the perfect move to prove people wrong once again.

For Leeds, it would provide some crucial depth at full-back while also being a genuinely exciting option as Spence is more than capable of taking England’s second-tier by storm.
