Timo Werner reacts as Leeds United ready last-gasp RB Leipzig transfer agreement

Leeds United are considering a shock move for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

The Whites are hoping to finish the summer transfer window with a flourish, with an attacking signing high among Daniel Farke’s priorities.

Nottingham Forest look set to beat Leeds to Dilane Bakwa, who was said to be among the options preferred at Elland Road.

Leeds signed Noah Okafor from AC Milan last week, but are expected to continue their hunt for a more natural winger before Monday’s transfer deadline day.

Any new arrival will take their place as the 11th new signing to join up with Farke’s squad this summer, in what has been an extremely busy window.

Leeds interested in move for Timo Werner

It has been a difficult week for the Whites. Leeds lost 5-0 to Arsenal on Saturday, 23 August, in what was a firm reality check.

And on Tuesday, Leeds were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Sheffield Wednesday after missing three penalties in a shootout.

Both games clearly demonstrated the need for a new attacker at Elland Road, with Farke’s side still lacking invention when going forward.

BILD has reported on 26 August that one option Leeds have considered is a move for RB Leipzig forward, Werner.

The Bundesliga side are keen to offload the 29-year-old, but he has, so far, been unreceptive to enquiries received from the West Yorkshire club and fellow Premier League side Burnley.

Timo Werner would be a lacklustre option for Leeds

In the years leading up to his £45m move to Chelsea, Werner was among the most sought-after forwards in world football.

The 19/20 season saw the German register a mammoth 36 direct goal contributions in just 34 Bundesliga appearances, including 28 goals.

But Werner could never quite recreate that form in the Premier League, with his highest goal tally reaching just six.

Leipzig bought him back in 2022 and sent him on back-to-back loans to Tottenham for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign and the entirety of last season.

There, Werner could not make much more of an impact. Leeds’ ability to counter-attack could suit the forward’s style more closely, but the Germans’ previous Premier League form should mark up red flags.
