‘Thursday ruined… thanks Phil’ – These Leeds fans not happy with Phil Hay transfer update

Athletic journalist Phil Hay has seemingly put to bed any rumours that Kiko Casilla will be leaving in this transfer window – and some Leeds United fans are not happy.

The Telegraph had claimed that he could leave and some unsubstantiated rumours on Twitter had claimed that Casilla was closing in on a return to Spain.

Meanwhile, Leeds have been linked with a number of new goalkeepers over the summer, with Southampton’s Angus Gunn the latest.

However, in a piece on The Athletic about how 20-year-old Illan Meslier has become the club’s new number one Hay said, “Sources at Leeds say Casilla will stay at Elland Road beyond the end of the transfer window.

“Despite his racism ban and the negative reaction of their own support towards him, there is nothing in the offing for him before Monday’s transfer deadline and no inclination on Leeds’ part to push him out.”

To be fair, while we would like to see Casilla leave and a new keeper come in, the Spanish player offers experienced cover for Meslier.

He played most of the games in the Championship-winning season and it’s unlikely Leeds would find anyone better to sit on the bench.

If he left and no-one came in, Leeds would be forced to use 19-year-old Elia Caprile if anything happened to Meslier and he’s definitely not ready for the Premier League yet.

However, some Leeds fans reacted to the news with dismay, with one saying, “Thanks for ruining my day Phil!”

Another said he hoped Meslier stayed fit as the thought of Casilla playing is a “big worry”.
