'This is huge', 'Wow' – These Leeds fans react as major Rodrigo de Paul update reported

TEAMtalk editor James Marshment caused a stir on Twitter this morning when he dropped an update on Leeds United signing Udinese midfielder Rodrigo de Paul.

He relayed news that personal terms had reportedly been agreed with the player and that Leeds had fought off competition from Inter Milan.

He said that was “two big steps forward for Leeds” towards a deal that could see the club transfer record broken for the second time in a week.

The fee for De Paul could be as much as £35.8m according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, which would smash the initial £27m fee that Leeds paid for Valencia striker Rodrigo.

It led one fan to proclaim, “Jesus Christ, this is huge if it happens”.

It would be. Leeds fans hit meltdown last weekend when their club spent £40m in the space of 24 hours, signing Rodrigo and Robin Koch.

A move for De Paul – a player described by journalist Phil Hay as “different level” – would be a huge statement of intent for the club.

This summer has seen a transfer strategy switch from Leeds looking for the best of the Championship, to elite-level international players.

According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, this has been through circumstance rather than trying to mislead.

Talking on the new episode of the All Stats Aren’t We podcast he said, “The plan never really did change but circumstances changed. Ben White was their number one target but Brighton said no. [Said] Benrahma they went cold on after his very slick video highlight reel from his holiday. [Ollie] Watkins was a target until Rodrigo became a realistic signing.”

This switch in strategy has seen Leeds reportedly fighting off competition from Inter Milan and signing the Spain number nine.

De Paul is a full Argentina international and fans are desperate for this “different level” signing to come off…
