'Terrific signing' - Phil Hay claims he could see 'perfect' £140k/wk PL ace moving to Leeds

Phil Hay has said that James Milner would be a “terrific signing” and “perfect for Leeds’ first season back” in the Premier League.

Hay also said that he’s one of the few high-profile big-money players who he could see joining Leeds.

Milner started his career at Leeds and has said that he would be open to a return.

BBC pundit Noel Whelan has said that he’d love to see him back at Elland Road but that he can’t see it happening this summer.

Milner signed a new contract extension at Liverpool that will keep him there until 2022.

Writing in a Q&A on the Athletic, Hay said, “He would be a terrific signing, perfect for Leeds’ first season back. And Bielsa would love everything about him.

“I don’t know what Milner makes of this or what the chances are but he’s one of the few players I could see leaving a club like Liverpool for a move like this.

“People talk about Erling Haaland but realistically, from now on Haaland is going to want to play at Champions League level. He’s too good not to.”

This is one deal that Leeds fans would absolutely love to see happen. And, if they get back into the Premier League, there’s every chance it could happen – perhaps not as early as this summer, though.

Milner is still doing the business for Liverpool, as evidenced by his contract extension, but at 34 his career is moving into the final stage.

He’s reportedly on £140k-a-week at Liverpool so Leeds would need to be in the Premier League and ready to make huge investments in players to land him.

However, he could be willing to take a pay drop for his next contract, given his age, and moving to Leeds would take him full circle and seem like the perfect end to a glittering career.

Hay claims that Bielsa would love everything about Milner and it’s clear to see why.

Milner is the ultimate professional and an all-round team player who can play in midfield or in defence.

First things first for Leeds, though – before any talk of landing players like Milner, Leeds need to get promoted.

Then the dreaming can begin.
