Swansea would struggle to reject Leeds offer for Flynn Downes – report

Swansea would find it ‘extremely hard’ to reject any interest in Leeds United target Flynn Downes this summer, according to Wales Online.

Reports emerged over the weekend that the Whites have earmarked 23-year-old midfielder Downes as a potential replacement for Kalvin Phillips should he end up leaving this summer [The Times].

While Swansea would want to keep hold of the former Ipswich man, their lack of parachute payments this summer means they would struggle to bat off interest, with Downes labelled as one of the most valuable assets.

Leeds would have money to spend if Phillips were to leave, with the England international linked with a £60m move away with Aston Villa, Newcastle and others among the interested parties.

Even with relegation the club would receive parachute payments and with several players likely to leave in that instance it would arguably make a transfer more likely.

Take advantage

If Leeds have identified a target for the transfer window then they need to be ruthless in their bid to bolster their squad.

If they’re in the Premier League next season then we have already seen how important adding depth will be considering all the injury problems they have suffered.

But if they go down to the Championship they will be in a position where they will immediately be one of the strongest teams in the division and will want to get back to the Premier League as soon as possible.

That means taking advantage of other clubs’ issues to boost themselves, just as many other clubs will be doing to them if they go down to take their best players.

Swansea’s whole model is based around signing young, developing and selling on for a good fee so Leeds know a deal will be there to get done, it’s just a matter of moving quickly.
