Stuart McKinstry to exit Leeds United as ‘major’ Elland Road news emerges

Leeds United are set to allow Stuart McKinstry to leave Elland Road for free this summer, according to The Daily Record.

The 20-year-old winger is currently on loan at Motherwell but has struggled for minutes since Stuart Kettlewell’s arrival at Fir Park.

The Daily Record now claim (15 May) that McKinstry is set to consider his options, with first-team football now a priority. It’s understood the lack of game time at Elland Road was a “major” factor in his decision to move on.

It’s understood he is already attracting interest from clubs in Scotland and England. A move to the Championship has also been suggested.

Makes sense

This is a move which makes sense for everyone involved. The young attacker needs to be playing first-team football and that’s just not going to happen at Elland Road.

A move to a League One or Two club would seem like the most sensible option for the 20-year-old. Having failed to make a significant impression in Scotland, a move to a Championship side would seem like a long shot. From Leeds’ perspective, they must accept that younger players do come with an element of risk.

There won’t be numerous success stories and McKinstry can join the tried and failed list. Luckily for Leeds, there have been plenty of positives when it comes to younger players in recent times.

Mateo Joseph and Sonny Perkins have been exceptional in the under-21s. Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood have seen Premier League minutes and Willy Gnonto has been exceptional. There will hopefully be some more names to add to that list in the coming years.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has shared a situation involving two players which is “confounding everyone”.
