Stoke and Sheffield United claim made as Leeds United want to sign Viktor Johansson
Carlton Palmer expects Stoke City and Sheffield United to join Leeds United in the race for Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.
The Sweden international has been linked with an exit after his side suffered relegation to League One recently.
It’s understood that the Blades could look to make a goalkeeping change after they got relegated from the Premier League.
Palmer told Football League World on 1 May: “He has been the standout performer for Rotherham, despite their relegation, and Leeds are keen on him.
“I could see Stoke City and Steven Schumacher enter into the race for him. He is a manager with an eye for tidy business.
“They will be clearing their squad and will be doing a lot of business this summer, and they will see Johansson as a target for that number one spot of theirs.
“Sheffield United could also be another club in there.
“They have shuffled their goalkeeping pack this season and could do so once again with relegation now confirmed back to the Championship.
“Wherever he goes next season, he will be a Championship goalkeeper, I am sure of that.”
Leeds United must continue to keep tabs on Viktor Johansson
Johansson’s potential move to Leeds could significantly strengthen their goalkeeping options, especially if current number one Illan Meslier departs.
The Swede has proven to be a standout performer for Rotherham United, even amidst their relegation to League One.
His impressive form indicates he could be a valuable addition to Leeds United, providing strong competition or serving as a capable replacement for Meslier.
However, the interest from other clubs like Stoke City and Sheffield United might lead to a bidding war, potentially driving up the price Leeds would have to pay for Johansson.
This scenario could result in Leeds paying more than they initially anticipated to secure his signature.

Nonetheless, the potential benefits of adding a highly skilled goalkeeper like Johansson to their squad could outweigh the financial costs, especially if he helps Leeds achieve their ambitions in the Championship or potentially back in the Premier League.
