Southampton want to sign Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell on loan

Southampton want to sign Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell on loan in January, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported on his Patreon on Sunday (10 December) that the Saints are looking into making a loan offer for the 21-year-old as he is “stuck on the fringes” at Elland Road.

He added that fellow Championship side Middlesbrough are also eyeing a move for the in-demand England U-21 international.

Can’t happen

The situation regarding Cresswell at Leeds is extremely difficult as he is desperate for first-team football after finding himself fourth in the pecking order behind the other centre-backs.

It appears extremely unlikely that he is going to get much more of a chance in the side as the season progresses, with two injuries likely needing to happen before he makes the starting lineup.

That means he will probably be pushing for a move away in January as he will be desperate to ensure his career doesn’t stall.

But he simply can’t be allowed to move to Southampton and improve a promotion rival, while Middlesbrough could also find themselves in the Championship playoff mix come the end of the season.

If a team closer to the bottom end of the table show some interest in signing him, then that would be an option that would probably suit Daniel Farke much better given the defender’s known quality.
