Southampton ready third bid for new signing as they also hunt Leeds United defender Cody Drameh
Southampton are set to make a third bid for Swansea defender Nathan Wood amid their interest in Leeds United full-back Cody Drameh, according to Darren Witcoop.
The Sunday Mirror journalist reported (27 August) that Drameh is in Southampton’s sights for a deal before deadline day as they look to sure up their defence following the “long-term lay off” of captain Jack Stephens.
Drameh has been in and out of Daniel Farke’s side so far this season but made an appearance for Leeds United on Saturday (26 August) to replace the injured Sam Byram in their thrilling 4-3 victory over Ipswich Town.
Stay put
Unless Southampton come in with a significant bid for Drameh, Leeds should consider keeping the high-potential youngster for the season.
The 21-year-old came into a lot of criticism against Ipswich after his poor back pass allowed the home side a chance back into the game as Nathan Broadhead made it 3-2 in stoppage time of the first half.
Farke was quick to defend the youngster after the match. As quoted by LeedsLive (26 August), Farke said: “Cody is a great lad. Should not be blamed. It’s not easy for him to come into first competitive game. Should blame my decision for playing him down the left. Even Shackleton struggled with Burns.”
While his poor mistake was not costly in the end for Leeds, it does perhaps show that he has some more development to do before he is a regular under Farke.
However, a move to Southampton may not be in Leeds’ best interests this summer. Farke confirmed that Byram will not be available for Leeds’ Tuesday clash against Salford City in the EFL Cup second round, meaning Drameh’s services will likely be called upon.

Southampton could push hard for Drameh in their late desperation for defensive reinforcements, but Leeds have already shown with Willy Gnonto that they will not let a player go unless his valuation is met.
Additionally, Leeds are not blessed with full-back options. During a tough Championship campaign, injuries and suspensions will likely hamper the White’s chances in games, just like any other side.
Having Drameh in the squad will be needed to cover these instances, as was proven against Ipswich. Drameh himself is a high-potential youngster who could develop well this season if he irons out silly mistakes and takes the chances when they come.
He will likely be in Farke’s long-term plans for Leeds, but unless a significant bid is submitted by the Saints and a replacement can be found, Drameh should stay put.
