Sky Sports pundit claims Leeds-linked 28y/o 'was one of the best players in the Championship'

Darren Bent believes that Andre Gray would be the “perfect signing” for Leeds United this month as the Whites hunt to sign a new striker.

Former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay reported via a live Q&A session on The Athletic website this week that Leeds have made an enquiry about the 28-year-old Watford player but have been unsuccessful in their advances.

Hay says that the Yorkshire club’s pursuit of Gray is one to watch in the current January transfer window but so far, little progress has been made.

Although he has struggled to shine in the Premier League, Gray is a proven striker at Championship level.

Across his spells at Brentford and Burnley, the Wolverhampton-born hitman scored 41 goals in 88 second-tier appearances.

His record at that level has led to former England international Bent claiming that Gray would be a top addition for Leeds this month.

“I think we’ve seen before when he was at Burnley, and he was the best player in the Championship that year with them,” Bent told Football Insider.

“He was one of the best players in the Championship that season, he’s got the pace, the power and that might be just what they need.

“Obviously [Patrick] Bamford isn’t really scoring the goals at the moment and it seems like neither they or West Brom want to win this league at the moment.

“They both seem to drop points at the same time, it never seems like one loses on the same weekend the other wins.

“It’s strange but I think that will be the perfect signing.”

Gray was definitely one of the top strikers of the Championship during his time in the second tier and no one can deny that his record is superb – Leeds are likely looking at him for that exact reason.

However Watford’s strong run of form and the fact that Gray is still getting plenty of game-time suggests that landing the Vicarage Road ace is going to be an issue for Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta.

Gray is not by any means prolific in the Premier League but he has still made 18 league appearances this term for the Hornets.

If they sell him, they might have to replace him.

Why, when Watford are playing so well at the moment, would Nigel Pearson risk upsetting the balance of his squad?
