Sky Sports presenter Jaydee Dyer has leapt to the defence of Leeds United shot-stopper Illan Meslier after a number of fans called on the club to strengthen their goalkeeper options.
In Sky Sports’ Good Morning Transfers on Thursday, a number of fans said that they would like to see Marcelo Bielsa add a new goalkeeper to the squad this month.
Kiko Casilla, Bielsa’s number-two, was in wretched form on Sunday as the Whites lost 3-0 to League Two side Crawley while 20-year-old Meslier has conceded 33 goals in 17 Premier League appearances.
However, Sky Sports’ Dyer has reminded viewers that Meslier is still a young goalkeeper and that he’s been very impressive in the Premier League given his lack of experience.
“I think Meslier’s settled in, first of all, and has just been unbelievable to the Premier League,” Dyer said, as shown on Sky Sports’ website.
He added: “He’s just taken to the Premier League, which is such a step up as well in terms of the intensity and the physicality. A lot of people were questioning that side of his game but there have been some stand-out moments that come to my mind in terms of his shot-saving.
“He’s been incredible this year and has got a really good future in this game.”
Nowhere near perfect – but still a huge prospect
According to stats by Wyscout, only West Brom’s Sam Johnstone has conceded more goals than Meslier in the Premier League this season.
Meslier has also conceded the second-most amount of shots this term after Johnstone .
The French goalkeeper does rank third though for saves made with 71, after Johnstone and Newcastle’s Karl Darlow and for prevented goals, he comes in at seventh in the Premier League [2.42].
Meslier has made some mistakes this season that have led to Leeds conceding but the level of his mistakes are nowhere near that of Casilla or some of the more experienced goalkeepers in the Premier League.
The former Lorient shot-stopper is definitely the best goalkeeper at Elland Road and if Leeds are going to sign a new player in that position, it will surely be to replace Casilla and not him.
As Dyer points out, Meslier has a bright future ahead of him so let’s hope he can continue playing and continue impressing in the Premier League for the Whites.
In other Leeds United news, this Leeds loanee has missed training as his agent works on terminating his deal.
