Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl shares Ian Poveda verdict amid Leeds contract situation

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has given his thoughts regarding on-loan Leeds United man Ian Poveda.

The winger has spent the second half of the season at Hillsborough, making 10 Championship appearances as the Owls have climbed out of the relegation zone.

Poveda’s performances in a Wednesday shirt have earned him an average rating of 6.66 [Sofascore].

Rohl this week described the 24-year-old, via the Sheffield Star, as “having a good impact for us when he has played”.

The Colombia forward has also turned out nine times for Leeds this term, but has seen his recent years at the club stitched together by loan moves.

Rohl has breathed life into Wednesday’s season. The team have hit form at the right time as they head into Saturday’s finale at Sunderland off the back of five matches unbeaten.

Back-to-back wins have ensured they only need a point to survive; even a defeat may be enough. Their 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers lifted the club out of the bottom three for the first time since the opening day of the campaign.

Does Ian Poveda have a future at Leeds United?

Poveda appears to be one of several Championship footballers with talent plain to see, but who needs to find a proper home.

Paul Robinson this week outlined Leeds’ attacking options, namedropping the likes of James, Summerville, Gnonto – the list goes on.

The diminutive winger’s football upbringing includes Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, and his professional debut with Manchester City. Add in England youth appearances and goals before his declaration for Colombia.

Ian Poveda needs a place to play regular football

Poveda’s arrival at Elland Road in January 2020 coincided with a Championship title. Without the capabilities he has, his CV would be far less glittering.

It’s clear he needs a home to play his best football – a place for an arm around him and a manager to tell him he’s first on the teamsheet every week. We’ve seen it with Jack Clarke since he left for Sunderland.

As far as Leeds are concerned, it’s excellent depth whereby the club can afford to loan out some of their game-deprived talent.

But for Poveda, who has been on loan at Blackburn, Blackpool and now Wednesday in the past three seasons, he must now be aching for a fresh start and a long-term deal elsewhere.
