Sebastiaan Bornauw shoots himself in the foot as Leeds United make new transfer decision
Sebastiaan Bornauw has stepped up admirably for Leeds United after being handed back-to-back starts.
The summer signing filled in at right centre-back in Daniel Farke’s five-man defence for Leeds’ 0-0 draw with Liverpool and the 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Elland Road.
Bornauw was a doubt to face Man United but thankfully recovered in time to prevent a disaster of sorts for Farke.
The German is already without Joe Rodon, explaining why Bornauw is finally getting a run in the side.
Bornauw was tipped to leave Leeds in the winter window, but that may now no longer be the case.
Sebastiaan Bornauw now looks likely to remain at Leeds
Bornauw has every right to have been frustrated by his lack of minutes prior to Leeds‘ past two matches, having made just two substitute appearances prior to that.
Farke has praised the Belgium international for his performances, but it has been suggested those comments may be somewhat bittersweet.
In an article for Nieuwsblad, journalist Pieter-Jan Calcoen suggested Bornauw may be wondering why it has taken so long to get a run in the side.
Calcoen adds that a move away looked likely this month, with Leeds accepting the defender needs to play ahead of the World Cup next summer.
However, Calcoen believes Bornauw may have inadvertently “shot himself in the foot” with his performances over the past week as Leeds will no longer be looking to loan him out.
It’s an ironic twist of fate, with the sentiment being that Bornauw will likely find himself back on the substitutes’ bench once the previously everpresent Rodon is back.
If not Bornauw, then who next for Leeds exit?
It now seems pretty nailed-on that Bornauw will not be allowed to leave this month.
In fact, Farke will be reluctant to see any first-team squad members depart over the next four weeks or so.
Fringe players seem more likely to get the green light to leave, including youngster Harry Gray.

It was reported on Tuesday that Gray will be allowed to leave Leeds this month on loan should the right opportunity arise.
Joel Piroe is the other name that has been touted with an exit, but he is in a similar position to Bornauw in that he may well be needed at some point.
Leeds needs to get the balancing act spot on this month, with arrivals surely needed before someone like Piroe can be considered for an exit.
