Sean Longstaff medical update emerges as Leeds United strike agreement
Leeds United appear to be inching closer towards signing Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer.
Longstaff looks all set to leave St James’ Park in the quest to get regular game time at Elland Road.
Last season, while the 27-year-old did play 25 league games, he did not feature for more than 60 minutes in a game since mid-December.

Longstaff set to arrive at Thorp Arch for his medical
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth (16 July), Longstaff is due for his medical before he moves to the Whites.
It’s understood that he will be at Thorp Arch on 17 July in order to finalise his transfer and complete his medical.
The deal between Leeds United and Newcastle for Longstaff is now close to completion, so an agreement can be reached.
He will be the first midfielder the West Yorkshire club have signed post their promotion to the Premier League.
Ethan Ampadu and Longstaff can form a good partnership at Leeds United
Ethan Ampadu and Sean Longstaff could form a dynamic midfield partnership at Leeds United, blending defensive solidity with creative energy.
Ampadu excels as a deep-lying midfielder, offering composure, ball-playing ability and tactical intelligence.
His performances for the Elland Road outfit have highlighted his reliability and leadership.
Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes Played |
---|---|---|---|---|
Total 2024/25 | 32 | 1 | 4 | 1,203′ |
Premier League | 25 | 0 | 2 | 787′ |
EFL Cup | 5 | 0 | 2 | 236′ |
FA Cup | 2 | 1 | 0 | 180′ |
Longstaff, a 27-year-old midfielder, brings box-to-box dynamism, work rate and goal-scoring threat.
Ampadu’s ability to anchor the midfield, intercept passes and initiate attacks complements Longstaff’s relentless pressing and forward runs, creating a balanced engine room.
Together, the duo could get the best out of each other, with Ampadu providing defensive cover and Longstaff driving forward to link with attackers.
This partnership would enhance Leeds’ survival push under Daniel Farke, combining youth, experience and complementary skill sets to control games and unlock defences.
