Sam Greenwood permanent exit ‘highly likely’ at Leeds United as seven-figure transfer reveal made by Phil Hay
Middlesbrough are “highly likely” to trigger a £1.5million option-to-buy clause in their loan deal with Leeds United for Sam Greenwood, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist reported on Friday (17 November) that Daniel Farke was happy to send Greenwood, 21, out on loan in the summer.
The young attacker has since done well on Teesside and Hay admits that there’s a high likelihood that Boro make his stay permanent at the end of the season.

How much did Leeds pay for Greenwood?
Leeds signed Greenwood from Arsenal in 2021 for a fee of £1.5million [The Athletic].
That means that if Boro do trigger that option-to-buy clause for the ex-Sunderland player, Leeds will only be breaking even on him unless there are certain add-ons and bonuses tied in as well.
Leeds will have also paid Greenwood’s wages for the last couple of years, meaning that overall they’ll be making a loss on an up-and-coming player who’s performing very well in the Championship.
So far this season, Greenwood has scored four goals in 11 appearances for Boro, with all four of those goals coming in his last six Championship appearances.

He scored the winner against league-leaders Leicester last time out, leading to Ray Parlour calling him a “massive talent” who is becoming a “superb weapon” at set-pieces [Northern Echo].
Greenwood’s versatility is great as he can play up front, as a number 10, in the centre of the midfield or, as he has been doing at Boro lately, out wide.
Leeds will be losing out if he goes for just £1.5million next year.
We cannot believe they agreed a break-even fee for the talented player.
In other Leeds United news, Hay says people close to this midfielder believe he’s finished at Elland Road.
