Romano update means Leeds set to miss out in transfer battle after £8m bid tabled

Leeds United target Kouadio Kone is on the verge of joining Borussia Monchengladbach, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Whites have been frequently been linked to the Toulouse player in recent weeks, with TuttoMercato suggesting Victor Orta was a keen admirer.

Manchester United and AC Milan have also shown an interest in the 19-year-old, making it a closely fought transfer battle.

However, it seems an £8m offer from the German side is set to be accepted, and it remains unclear if Leeds tabled a bid of their own.

An ideal target

Kone is a highly regarded prospect, as the interest in him proves, with some describing the midfielder in a similar vein to Paul Pogba.

And the Frenchman has enjoyed success on the pitch this season.

He has been handed his first opportunity as a regular in the first-team, and seized it with both hands.

Toulose have benefitted also, and sit in second place due in part to the form shown by Kone in his 18 appearances.

During the first part of the campaign, the box-to-box player has averaged 3.1 successful dribbles per game (WyScout), while 2.8 average interceptions underline his skill off the ball.

Kone could play in a similar role to Kalvin Phillips, therefore, and provide competition for places.

It’s a position that Leeds do need cover for but a significant swoop in this transfer window was always unlikely.
