Romano Schmid transfer would be ‘crazy’, here’s what Leeds United really want

Leeds United may not be prioritising more midfield additions in the January transfer window.

Daniel Farke led his side to a very late 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday to steer his side even further away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The Whites now sit on 25 points in 16th place as Farke is keen for the 49ers to supply him with more incomings before 2 February.

Leeds announced the loan signing of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton last week, as the attacking midfielder featured on Farke‘s bench against Fulham, but was unable to make his debut.

However, talk of Romano Schmid emerged from nowhere on Sunday.

Romano Schmid transfer would be ‘crazy’, striker is the priority

On Sunday, it was reported that Leeds have made an offer for Schmid, who is currently playing at the top of his game in the Bundesliga.

The midfielder is a key player for Werder Bremen, but with his team struggling in Germany, Schmid could seek Premier League football this month.

Romano Schmid’s Bundesliga record this season:

According to Graham Smyth, the Whites had been discussing the possibility of signing Schmid, until they landed Buonanotte.

It’s now understood that Leeds are very unlikely to pursue Schmid any further, as attacking midfielders in general now seem unnecessary after Buonanotte’s arrival.

Something “crazy” would have to happen for the Whites to rekindle their interest in the Austrian, with injuries always a possibility.

Instead, Leeds are said to remain very keen on signing a striker this window, with Farke already having a few names in mind.

Which strikers have Leeds been linked to?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been on fire for Leeds this season, and Lukas Nmecha’s return has only made things even more complicated.

Farke’s switch to a 3-5-2 formation has allowed both number nines to excel, and with Nmecha’s winning goal against Fulham, it’s hard to see how the German head coach could drop one or the other.

However, given that Nmecha has suffered from an injury recently, the Leeds boss may have been handed a reality check.

Leeds have been linked to Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, with the Premier League strugglers said to want around £40million for the forward’s services.

The Whites have also been tipped for a move to sign Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Garcia this month, as the 49ers will have to weigh up finances and future ambitions before making formal approaches.

Farke’s forward line has been excelling, but it could soon be given an even bigger boost with a new striker.
