Robin Koch Leeds United exit likely this summer as Newcastle United show interest

Robin Koch’s exit from Leeds this summer “shouldn’t be considered unlikely” as Newcastle United circle for a potential deal, according to Christian Falk.

Koch has emerged as the first-choice central defender at Elland Road this season with a host of good performances, but still didn’t make it into Hansi Flick’s Germany squad for the World Cup last year.

And according to BILD journalist Falk, writing on Caught Offside’s Substack account (11 March), Koch is aware that playing for a team playing European football could help him get in the national team and that is incredibly important to him.

“Robin Koch has a problem,” he said.

“The German national team coach, Hansi Flick, did not take him to the World Cup. He knows that he can build his international profile by joining a club that plays in Europe.

“Newcastle are interested, and if the club secures some European football next term that would hugely encourage Koch to consider a transfer to Eddie Howe’s outfit.

“Being a part of the national side is incredibly important to him. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that playing in the Bundesliga, too, would grant him more attention in Germany. Therefore, a summer transfer shouldn’t be considered unlikely.”

Oh dear

Koch has really grown into his role as the top centre-back at the club so far this season, and he is a big part of the future at Elland Road.

It’s no surprise that top clubs are going to be taking a look at him, and it will be hard for Leeds to ignore big-money interest because we’re hardly loaded.

A club like Newcastle have got a really interesting project right now and can offer big wages to go with European football, while Bundesliga clubs will be looking at him too and that could be a return home which would be appealing to get more recognition for the national team.

But Leeds have to ensure they’re doing all they can to keep hold of these players, especially if we’re still in the Premier League next season to ensure that relegation battles don’t become the norm at Elland Road and that we’re able to build and push forward.
