Report: Leeds United set to clinch Junior Firpo signing on Monday

Leeds United are set to officially complete the transfer of Barcelona defender Junior Firpo on Monday, according to Alfredo Martinez.

Spanish news outlet El Transistor, followed by world-renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, carried quotes by journalist Martinez, also followed by Romano on his verified Twitter profile.

On Sunday [04/07/21], Martinez said: “Tomorrow the signing of Junior Firpo by Leeds United and [Marcelo] Bielsa will be made official. The operation closes for about 15 million euros [£12.9million]. It is a good operation for Barcelona.”

Finally?

We’re not getting ahead of ourselves – there have been numerous conflicting reports already about when a deal for Firpo would be completed.

Initially, it was expected to all be tied up last week, but there looks to have been a few delays which have ensured it has been dragged into this week.

However, Martinez sounds convinced that Monday is the day it all gets finalised, and he actually says it is when it will be made “official”, so fans should expect an announcement of sorts from the club or player.

He appears to be a reliable source, given his verified Twitter account which boasts over 250,000 followers, including Romano and Times journalist Paul Joyce, who specialises in north-west football.

Of course, there could still be varying delays to the deal – transfers are a complicated process – but it looks to be as good as done.

It’s important to get it sorted as soon as possible as the Whites have already begun pre-season training.

The players have been undergoing various tests to check their status ahead of what is sure to be another gruelling pre-season under Bielsa, and new recruits must acclimatise to El Loco’s demands or risk a spell on the sidelines at the start of the season.

Bielsa is very demanding in his methods, and players will not start or play significant minutes until they are adjusted to his preferences.

The sooner Firpo is through the door the better, for the club and himself.
