Report: Leeds can land Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico for knockdown £13m
Leeds United could bag themselves a summer bargain in the form of Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, according to the Daily Mail.
They report that the reigning Dutch champions are willing to sell the 28-year-old for a reduced price of £13million and that they will not stand in the way of his previously-held desire of playing in one of Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues.
Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa are said to offer an attractive proposition for the 28-cap Argentina international, despite his preference in the past to move to a side competing in European competition.
Manchester City and Inter Milan have watched Tagliafico closely in recent seasons and would be able to guarantee him further chances in continental competition.
But the Whites still harbour outside hopes of bringing European football back to Elland Road next season as they sit six points behind seventh-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table.
Tagliafico has been at Ajax since 2018 and he has made 11 appearances across the Champions League and Europa League this season, as well as 24 outings in the Eredivisie. [WhoScored]
At £13million Tagliafico would represent a snip given his technical and defensive prowess allied to his years of experience.
He’s played in a Champions League semi-final and appeared at the 2018 World Cup so he’s certainly got a glittering CV.
A tally of 11 goals combined in the previous two seasons also hints at a marauding full-back who would act as a valuable attacking option for a side who love to get forward.
Under Bielsa the Whites love to do just that and that’s why Ezgjan Alioski has maintained a place in the starting XI despite naturally being a winger.
But if the North Macedonian does indeed depart West Yorkshire this summer Tagliafico surely represents an upgrade in that he is also more suited to coping with the defensive tasks, as well as contributing going forwards.
He’s been described as “world-class” by Total Football Analysis and if the Whites can get him for the price mooted then it’s surely a no-brainer that would free up valuable funds for other targets.
