Red Bull update drops after Max Wober transfer news at Leeds United

Max Wober is attracting interest from RB Salzburg in January, but a return to the Red Bull club from Leeds United is unlikely, according to Peter Linden.

The Austrian journalist reports [12 December] that Die Roten Bullen’s chief, Rouven Schroder, has his eyes on the Whites’ centre-back — who made his first Championship start in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday [10 December].

While the defender showed that his performance still needs improvement, his chances of returning to Salzburg in the upcoming transfer window have “dwindled”, and despite Red Bull’s investment in the West Yorkshire club, a discount on any fee isn’t expected.

The 26-year-old joined the Peacocks from the Austrian outfit in January 2023 before joining Borussia Monchengladbach on loan last season.

Max Wober essential to Leeds United squad

Daniel Farke hasn’t been able to call upon Wober much in the current campaign due to his fitness issues.

For most of the campaign, the German manager has relied on Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk as his preferred backline pairing, which has been relatively fruitful.

After Sheffield United’s win over Millwall on Wednesday [11 December], they’ve retained the top spot in the league table, but the Whites are just one point behind them.

Leeds have had to contend with various injuries this season, but they are still near the summit of the Championship.

Farke has done a brilliant job so far in milking the squad’s depth, but the West Yorkshire club evidently need more reinforcements in January.

Considering the lack of options at the back, it wouldn’t make sense to sell Wober in the coming months, with James Debayo the German manager’s fourth choice.

While the Austrian might want to leave due to his lack of minutes in the starting lineup, it would be prudent of the Whites to keep a hold of him at least until next summer.
