Quickfire Leeds double striker swoop on the cards upon PL promotion – reliable journalist
Leeds United are set to pounce on Wigan strikers Joe Gelhardt and Sean McGurk once their promotion is confirmed, according to Alan Nixon.
The Sun journalist reported on his personal Twitter account on Friday that Leeds’ interest in the two strikers is “very warm” but they are also attracting attention from other clubs.
However, it is understood that the Whites could be the first club to make a quickfire move for the two teenagers once their promotion to the Premier League is mathematically confirmed.
Leeds can win promotion as early as Saturday if Brentford fail to win away at Stoke City but one more point from their remaining two games will get the job done.
Promotion is more or less inevitable for the Yorkshire club so that surely means a move for the two Wigan youngsters is also inevitable.
Leeds fans are likely to have heard about Gelhardt, who is an England Under-18 international that has played a role in Wigan’s first team this season.
The Liverpool-born 18-year-old has scored one goal in 17 Championship outings for the Latics and has been dubbed as the ‘next Wayne Rooney’.
As for McGurk, fans might have less a clue of about who he is as he’s never made a senior appearance.
The 17-year-old forward scored against Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup this season and, as a Liverpool fan, celebrated by holding up six fingers to signify the number of European titles won by the Reds.
It would be nice for Leeds to bring in a passionate youngster like that but out of the two, we are way more excited by Gelhardt, especially as the Whites need to add some strength in depth to their striker options and he is quite a way ahead of McGurk in terms of his development.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are eyeing up an attacker who was sent off at the weekend.
