PSV Eindhoven 'fear' Cody Gakpo exit as Leeds United circle amid £34.1m transfer

PSV Eindhoven “fear” that star man Cody Gakpo will leave the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline with Leeds still interested in the forward, according to ED.

The Dutch winger has been a target for several Premier League clubs this summer including the Whites, Wolves, Southampton and Manchester United but has so far yet to make the move away from the Eredivisie.

But with the deadline just two days away and PSV no longer in the Champions League, ED say the player will now “probably leave” the club because of the interest from the Premier League.

Southampton are said to have had a bid rejected for the 23-year-old this week, with PSV stating the €40m (£34.1m) is the likely price that he’ll be allowed to leave for.

Leeds were willing to spend that amount on Charles De Ketelaere earlier this summer and have been tracking Gakpo for weeks, but it’s unclear if they’re willing to go that high for him before the deadline.

Special talent

Gakpo lit up the Eredivisie for PSV last season with double figures for goals and assists, but so far this season the forward has struggled to get going considering all the attention around him.

He failed to make any sort of impact over two legs against Rangers in the Champions League qualifiers and is reportedly disappointed at a move to Manchester United not materialising.

Now more mid-table teams seem to be paying attention and Leeds could be looking to cash in on that, knowing that with the right development and top teams already watching him they could make a huge profit in a couple of seasons like they did with Raphinha.

His ability to play across the front three, score goals consistently and create chances for his teammates will be a huge positive for the team and he has the star quality to command a starting place.

It may be unlikely, but it’s certainly a situation to keep an eye on before the window slams shut on Thursday night.
