Premier League set to make Leeds PSR announcement as quiet January transfer window continues
Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League has brought with it a whole new set of financial challenges.
In each of the last two seasons, all three teams coming up from the Championship have immediately been relegated.
It’s clear that in order to maintain their status in the Premier League, promoted sides must spend heavily and improve their squads, and Daniel Farke was strongly backed by the Leeds hierarchy last summer.
However, profit and sustainability rules (PSR) mean that the punishment is severe for any top-flight team that oversteps the mark.
Premier League to announce any PSR breaches
PSR states that no Premier League club can record losses of over £105million across three seasons.
Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have breached regulations in recent times, with the Toffees receiving an eight-point deduction and Forest losing four points in the 2023-24 campaign.
According to the iPaper, the Premier League will announce if any side has failed to comply with PSR across the last three years on 14 January.
Nine clubs have posted consecutive losses in the past two years, but it is expected that no side are at risk of punishment this time around.
Leeds are not one of the nine sides mentioned, so should not have any worries about punishment for this year at least, with squad cost ratio set to come in from next season.
Leeds making slow progress in January window
It has been a very slow start to the transfer window for Farke’s side, who are yet to make a single addition to their squad this month.
Leeds are only targeting one or two signings in January, as they are already nearing the PSR threshold for the 2025-26 campaign.
Danilho Doekhi is one player who could be making his way to Elland Road, though, with his contract at Union Berlin expiring in the summer.
The defender has lots of experience playing in a back three, so he should slot into the Whites’ system very nicely.
With just six months left on his current deal, Doekhi could be available for a cut price this month.
However, Wolfsburg are also in the race for the Dutch defender, so Leeds will have to move quickly to get the deal over the line.
