Portsmouth stance on Liam Cooper transfer emerges after Leeds United exit

Portsmouth are weighing up a move for Liam Cooper following his Leeds United exit this summer, according to TEAMtalk.

The outlet reported on its website on Sunday (11 August) that John Mousinho is eager to add some experience to his backline as his side begins their first season back in the Championship.

Leeds are yet to make a concrete offer for the Scotland international to extend his stay, with reports suggesting the only proposal presented to the defender has been made on a verbal basis [Graham Smyth, 11 August].

Blackburn Rovers had been eager to secure Cooper’s signature before talks between the two parties broke down and while Watford held an initial interest, that never resulted in an actual contract offer [Beren Cross, 2 August].

It is a bit of a surprise to see Cooper still without a club so long after his final game in a Leeds United shirt, but it does seem like the defender has attracted plenty of interest from a whole host of different clubs.

Whether or not Pompey or any of the other clubs interested in his services are willing to match the wages and length of the contract the defender is looking for remains to be seen, but this could be a good fit for him.

A move to Fratton Park would allow the Scotland international to play week in and week out in the Championship and that regular first-team football will allow him to continue playing at an international level as well.

For Pompey, he would add some much-needed maturity and knowledge of the Championship to their side as they look to keep their heads above the relegation zone in their first season back in the second tier.

On top of that, Daniel Farke’s side won’t be strengthening a potential promotion rival. All in all, this feels like a very good move for all parties involved.
