Player explains why he rejected Leeds despite reported £31.4m bid

Leeds United fans will be well aware that the club has missed out on signing striker Jonathan David by now.

On Tuesday, Ligue 1 club Lille confirmed that they signed the Canada international from KAA Gent in deal reportedly worth £27million [Goal].

Gent chairman Ivan De Witte had confirmed that Leeds were keen to sign David, 20, and earlier this week, it was reported by HLN that the Whites tabled a huge £31.4million bid for the striker’s services.

However, David reportedly rejected the chance to head to Elland Road despite Leeds outbidding Lille and now, he has explained why he made that choice.

“Everyone knows the Premier League is a high-quality league. But my choice was dictated by the fact that I wanted above all to be sure of playing,” David told France Bleu when asked why he snubbed a switch to Leeds.

David must not have been offered the same assurances by Leeds as he was with Lille.

As we all know, Marcelo Bielsa is a massive fan of consistent team selections and we truly expect Patrick Bamford to start up front for the Whites in their first game back in the Premier League – regardless of who else is brought in.

David must have realised this and thought that with Bamford already at Leeds and having two years of playing for Bielsa under his belt, he’s likely to be playing second fiddle to the ex-Chelsea striker.

It is a shame that Leeds have missed out on David but, at the end of the day, they can now spend that money elsewhere and maybe use it towards signing Ben White permanently from Brighton.
