Player confirms he snubbed Leeds transfer after £14.5m deal wrapped up

Josko Gvardiol has confirmed he rejected the chance to sign for Leeds United after a move to RB Leipzig was confirmed on Monday.

Leipzig confirmed via their official Twitter account that Gvardiol, 18, has agreed to join them on a five-year deal which will begin in July next year.

Reports claim that the Bundesliga club has paid £14.5million for the Croatia Under-21 defender.

Gvardiol will remain at Dinamo Zagreb for the rest of this season, where he will continue to develop before joining Leipzig ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

And that is why Leeds were snubbed by the defender as he claims that a move to the Premier League would’ve been too soon for him when he still has plenty of growing to do in Croatia.

“The reason was that they gave me an option to stay at Dinamo for a bit longer,” said Gvardiol, as quoted by LeedsLive.

“I think it was too early to go to England, one of the strongest leagues in the world.

“So staying at Dinamo will contribute to my development in general.”

You cannot fault Gvardiol here.

The 18-year-old has only made 16 senior appearances in his entire career, with four of them coming in the opening stages of the new season in Croatia.

Leeds would’ve more than likely offered more money for Gvardiol due to the major financial gulf between clubs in England and Germany so it is kind of refreshing to see the youngster turn down a potentially more lucrative contract in order to spend another year playing in Croatia.

Gvardiol’s a good young player with The Athletic’s Phil Hay saying that he is “touted as one of the best [young prospects] in Europe”.

But there is a silver lining to this because Leeds moved to sign Spain international Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad.

Leeds had an experienced international join their ranks rather than what could’ve been n inexperienced youngster that involves a lot of risk.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites will sign this Premier League player on one condition.
