Phil Hay told Leeds United want to sign James Garner from Manchester United as reveal shared today

Leeds United are eyeing up Manchester United midfielder James Garner but there are doubts about whether the deal will get done, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Garner, 21, is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, who are in stunning form in the Championship and are mounting a late bid to win automatic promotion from the Premier League.

Ex-Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Hay has been told that the England Under-21s midfielder is a target at Elland Road.

However, he’s not sure whether it’s a deal that will get done with Man United wanting to keep hold of the deep-lying midfielder.

“One player who was mentioned to me a few weeks back was James Garner, who’s at Manchester United on loan at Nottingham Forest,” said Hay on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast [29 April, 31m05s].

“I don’t know if Leeds will go for him in all honesty but he’s someone who’s certainly been mentioned in those circles.”

Hay added: “Yes, [he’s a deep-lying midfielder] or is in that mould of a number six and has been very good at Forest.

“They’re having one hell of a season and are one of those clubs, had they made a managerial change earlier, would be top-two at the moment and coming up.

“Garner’s well-thought-of over there.

“Manchester United like the idea of keeping him but I think when it comes to loan options, he might have a few.”

Get him in

Garner would be an outstanding signing.

The 21-year-old has been in sensational form at the City Ground this season, scoring four goals and supplying eight assists in 43 appearances across all competitions for Forest, who’ve won eight of their last nine Championship games.

Speaking on ITV in March, as quoted by the MEN, when Forest lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup, Man United legend Roy Keane waxed lyrical about Garner, saying: “He’s been [in] a really good partnership with [Ryan] Yatesy, they complement each other very well, he’s technically very good.

“He likes to dictate the play, sits a little bit deeper than Yates. Tough game for him today, this is a great experience for young players coming up against top players like Liverpool, great way to learn.”

Garner is the kind of player who Leeds need to sign this summer.

As Keane said, he’s someone who can star in a deep-lying playmaker role, which would mean he’d be a perfect cover option for Kalvin Phillips as Leeds simply cannot play without the Yorkshire Pirlo in their side.

Garner is perhaps more attack-minded than Phillips, which means that they may even work well when playing together as the base of the midfield.

If Forest do win promotion, they’ll no doubt have a look at signing Garner on another loan or permanently.

But Leeds should really have a go at signing the Man United starlet as he really does look like a star in the making.

In other Leeds United news, a player who had a move to Leeds blocked by Bielsa would be perfect for Marsch.
