Phil Hay suggests Helder Costa exit from Leeds United may still be on the cards
Phil Hay suggests Helder Costa could still leave Leeds United in the final days of this summer transfer window.
Costa, 27, has failed to impress in his time at Elland Road and especially struggled on Tuesday night in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crewe at Elland Road.
According to The Athletic journalist Hay, Costa is a player who has doubts surrounding his future with just a matter of days to go before the transfer window closes.
And as Leeds may still bring in a new winger, it could lead to Costa moving on.
“I think around the fringes, there are still question marks over people and I think [of] Costa, in particular,” said Hay on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast.
“The suggestion that at some stage Leeds might go for another winger, I think is justified by Costa’s form at the moment.”
Costa is into his third season as a Leeds United player now and he still doesn’t look anywhere near good enough to be a regular part of our starting line-up.
It was always a weird deal to agree to sign the one-time Portugal international on a loan-to-buy basis from Wolves, especially when the permanent fee was a whopping £16million.
Wolves let Costa go because he wasn’t any good for them in the Premier League and surprise, surprise, it’s been the same for us.
Costa played a big role in our promotion-winning season but he was by no means one of Marcelo Bielsa’s best players, which made the loan-to-buy arrangement even more baffling than it was.
Leeds would have to work miracles to recoup the money they lost on paying for Costa.
If he goes, we could see a similar loan arrangement struck because the winger was so expensive for us and still has three years left on his contract Elland Road.
In other Leeds United news, Tottenham have offered this international player to the Whites.
