Phil Hay shares whether he sees a renewed Leeds hunt to sign Matej Vydra this month

Leeds United are very unlikely to make a renewed attempt to sign Matej Vydra, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Vydra, 27, was widely reported to be a top target for Leeds in 2018 before he left Derby County to join Premier League club Burnley.

However since moving to Turf Moor, the Czech Republic international has scored just two goals in 25 appearances in all competitions, with only eight of those appearances coming this season.

Vydra was, once again, linked with a move to Elland Road earlier this season when Italian news outlet Mondo Udinese reported he was set for a £7million switch to Yorkshire in the January transfer window.

However former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay has finally offered his thoughts on a possible move to Leeds for Vydra – and has effectively ruled out the possibility of it happening.

“Can’t see them ever going back to Vydra after what happened first time, although football can be funny like that,” he said, via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon.

While Hay admits that there’s always a chance that things could change regarding Vydra, the chances of it happening have to be remote.

Leeds need a new striker this month after Eddie Nketiah’s return to Arsenal left Patrick Bamford as Marcelo Bielsa’s only out-and-out striker in the first-team squad.

Vydra is proven in the Championship with 65 goals in 187 second-tier appearances.

However, after the way Leeds’ interest in him went in the summer of 2018, and the fact he has barely played or scored for Burnley, means that he is unlikely to be a serious target for Bielsa.

Che Adams and Andre Gray still seem the most realistic targets for the Whites and hopefully one of those can be snapped up by Bielsa before the end of the month.

In other Leeds United news, dangerously inconsistent QPR could throw a spanner into the works for Leeds this weekend.
