Phil Hay shares significant update on Leeds bid to sign new centre-forward
Leeds United appear to have taken a major stride towards signing RB Leipzig centre-forward Jean-Kevin Augustin before the end of this month.
Augustin, 22, joined Monaco on loan from Leipzig in the summer and for Leeds to sign the French striker, they would require the Ligue 1 club to terminate that agreement.
And, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, Monaco are set to agree to end Augustin’s loan spell there, opening up a move to Elland Road.
It is also understood that Augustin is “happy” with what he is being offered by Leeds.
Augustin has scored just one goal since joining Monaco in the summer but in fairness, he has only made 13 appearances across all competitions and started just two games in Ligue 1.
During his two seasons at RB Leipzig, when he played a lot more regularly, Augustin scored 20 goals in 67 total appearances.
When you consider that those 20 goals came in the Bundesliga, Champions League and Europa League, you would imagine that he would have no problem in finding the back of the net in the Championship.
We shouldn’t just assume that Augustin is going to score a shed load of goals for the Whites but with the lack of strikers in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad at the moment, the Frenchman will at least be better than no one.
It is hard to see Augustin being a poor addition at Elland Road.
He could be the exact striker Leeds need to win their race for promotion.
In other Leeds United news, a 30 per cent clause has been included in the most recent completed deal at Elland Road.
