Phil Hay shares £16m Joel Piroe twist after Leeds United development on Thursday

The signing of forward Joel Piroe from Swansea City cost Leeds United as much as £16million, according to Phil Hay.

The Athletic journalist reported on 25 August that the Whites agreed to pay the Swans an initial £10.5million, which could eventually rise to £16million in potential add-ons for the Dutchman.

He said the 24-year-old has been at the forefront of Leeds’ mind since the start of the summer, with the club eventually getting the deal over the line late on Thursday night (24 August).

Has to deliver

There is no question about it, Piroe simply has to deliver after Leeds have forked out a considerably amount at Championship level to land him.

But the deal will probably only reach £16million if he does well at Elland Road, with the agreement being an initial £10.5million and the add-ons likely to include him scoring a certain amount of goals and, potentially, firing the Whites to promotion back to the Premier League.

Their chances of achieving that ambition have been massively improved by securing the signing of the Dutchman after he has proven himself in the second tier over the past few years.

The forward scored 46 goals in 96 appearances for Swansea since he joined from Dutch side PSV in 2021, including 20 last season and 24 in the previous campaign.

He will no doubt add much-need quality up top for the West Yorkshire club and the fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Whites shirt this season.
