Phil Hay responds to Italian claim Leeds United are lining up bid for Nahitan Nandez

Phil Hay has ruled out the possibility of Leeds United making a move to sign midfielder Nahitan Nandez from Cagliari this month.

Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb reported on Tuesday [4 January] that Leeds could soon table a bid to sign the 26-year-old Uruguay international.

However, The Athletic journalist Hay has reported that a move for Nandez won’t be happening and he also touched on a potential legal issue regarding him back in Uruguay.

“Inevitably, within about two days [of the transfer window being open], Nandez from Cagliari had been linked,” said Hay on The Phil Hay Show podcast.

After being told about potential trouble back in Uruguay involving Nandez, Hay added: “Let’s not get into that because I don’t know the full details but something is going on.”

Michael Normanton then said: “There’s a potential court case brewing so we’ll leave it there.”

Hay then continued by saying: “That’s not going to happen, that one. I don’t think that’s one they’re into.”

Stay well clear

On January 2, Football Italia relayed quotes from Nandez where the midfielder denied feeling Uruguay to avoid arrest for alleged domestic abuse of his ex-wife.

It remains to be seen what comes of this but we don’t really want to get too involving in discussing anything about that.

It may have an impact on Nandez’s future and whether Leeds to go in to sign him or not but after seeing how strongly linked he was in the summer before not signing, we’d assume the same would happen again this month.

Nandez would be an ideal fit for Marcelo Bielsa as he’s versatile enough to be able to play out on the wings as well as in his favoured central midfield role.

LeedsLive report that Nandez is a player who “has the ability to play in a deeper role or in a more advanced position where he can get into the box and score goals” so he sounds like just the kind of player we need.

Bielsa’s midfield options are limited and a few of them are either 30-years-old or on the wrong side of 30 so we need a refresh in that area.

Nandez sounds as though he could be a direct replacement for Mateusz Klich if he was brought in but, as Hay says, Leeds fans shouldn’t get excited by this one as it seems to be a complete non-starter.
