Phil Hay moots Tyler Roberts loan exit from Leeds United after yet another shocker

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has mooted the possibility of Tyler Roberts being sent out on loan by Leeds United in the last week of the January transfer window.

Roberts, 23, has regularly struggled to impress Leeds fans and he was criticised once again for his performance in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Sunday.

Hay admits that things haven’t been rosy for the Welsh international at Elland Road and says he can see why a late January loan exit makes sense for the forward.

“I can’t argue with the potential value of a loan for Roberts,” said Hay in the comments section of one of his stories on The Athletic website.

“It takes him out of the firing line, it reduces the pressure on him and it potentially gets him regularly starts (which he doesn’t look like getting at Leeds).

“He’s had 100+ games for Leeds now and it’s not clicking.”

Back to the Championship?

Roberts was a fringe player for us in the Championship and he’s a fringe player for us now in the Premier League.

He’s not long turned 23-years-old, he’s been at Leeds for four years and as Hay says, it simply isn’t clicking for him.

Roberts’ contract still has another two-and-a-half years left on it before it expires so it would make sense to loan him out now and then look to sell him in the summer before his value drops.

Hopefully, if he does well on loan at a team in the Championship between now and the summer, it means we may get a decent fee for him.

Otherwise, what’s the point in persisting with him?

You can probably count on two hands how many brilliant games Roberts has had in a Leeds United shirt when he’s made 105 appearances for the club in all competitions.

It’s not harsh to say that we need to be moving on from the players in the squad who are clearly not cut out for the Premier League.

Roberts is, without doubt, one of them.

In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling was stunned by something “unbelievable” that happened against Newcastle.
