Phil Hay makes major Leeds transfer claim, details how many signings he expects

Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that Leeds United will spend “considerably less” in the upcoming window than the £100m+ they spent on new players last summer.

Leeds strengthened their side considerably in the summer, smashing their transfer record for Rodrigo and spending eight-figure sums on Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Raphinha.

Leeds will be looking to add new players but Hay has warned that it might not be such a spectacular summer.

On the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast he was asked how many signings Leeds would make and how much they would spend.

He replied saying, “A minimum of three signings, expenditure very hard to say but I know it will be considerably less than last summer.”

Asked whether Leeds would break their transfer record again, Hay said, “I don’t think so.”

Evolution not revolution

Leeds fans might be disappointed by this but it makes a lot of sense.

Under Marcelo Bielsa it’s always been about evolution rather than revolution and it’s served us very well so far.

We’re looking at a top-half finish this season with the current team. The plan after this would be to try and get into Europe in the next couple of years.

With the improvement the current players have had and Bielsa adapting to the Premier League, you’d have to say we’re not far off.

Who would you want to get rid of from the current squad?

Gjanni Alioksi is probably on his way and a world-class left-back is essential.

We also need cover for Kalvin Phillips and a new body in central midfield.

Three players – as long as they’re all of the quality of Raphinha – sounds absolutely perfect to us.
