Phil Hay: Lewis O'Brien to sign new Huddersfield deal today after Leeds United pursuit
Lewis O’Brien is set to sign a new three-year deal at Huddersfield today (Tuesday) after summer interest from Leeds United amounted to nothing, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Leeds were keen to sign a midfielder in the summer and had earmarked O’Brien as one of their top targets, after missing out on Conor Gallagher.
The Athletic reported that the Elland Road outfit value the 22-year-old at around £4 million, but the Terriers wanted the fee to be doubled.
Hay has now reported that the youngster is going to sign a new deal at Huddersfield.
The midfield is one area Marcelo Bielsa should have improved in the summer, but in the end, it didn’t happen.
Kalvin Phillips remains the standout midfielder for the club, but a back-up option would have been very useful.
Bielsa has tried Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk, Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas and Diego Llorente in the defensive midfield role in the absence of Phillips, and while they all can perform in a stop-gap role, the balance in the team gets severely disrupted.
This season, Leeds are lacking that bite in midfield, and missing out on signing O’Brien could prove costly. In the 3-0 defeat against Liverpool, the home side barely managed to prevent the Liverpool midfield from taking control of the game even before they went down to 10 men.
While defeats against the big teams would hardly define their season, it’s the results (and the performance to go with it) against the likes of Burnley and Newcastle that are really frustrating.
Huddersfield will have more power at the negotiation table if Leeds come calling for O’Brien again. However, Leeds are most likely to look for other options either in January or next summer.
