Leeds United want to sign Ben White permanently from Brighton but the Whites are on the hunt for replacements with a deal unlikely, according to Phil Hay.
Writing on The Athletic website, Hay has reported that Leeds would like to replace White, 22, with a British centre-back or a centre-back who has a strong understanding of the game in England.
It is understood that Tottenham’s Juan Foyth was considered but Leeds are more interested in other centre-backs at this stage.
Victor Orta is said to be “juggling plans” for the next transfer window ahead of a 2020/21 campaign that Leeds are not sure what league they will be playing in.
It is very likely that United will be in the Premier League though.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side moved eight points clear of third-placed Brentford on Saturday with a resounding 3-0 win against Fulham.
White was tremendous in that game, keeping Aleksandar Mitrovic – the best forward in the Championship – quiet.
White is going to be almost impossible to replace because it is hard to think how even a newly-promoted Leeds United would be able to sign anyone better.
The on-loan Brighton man has barely put a foot wrong all season and has reportedly attracted attention for Liverpool and Manchester City – as well as England manager Gareth Southgate.
If, somehow, Leeds can sign White permanently from Brighton then they need to do so because players like him don’t come around all that often. He is clearly Premier League quality.
But if a deal cannot be achieved, Orta and Bielsa are going to have a very difficult job on their hands to find someone who can be an improvement.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites must fork out a six-figure sum of money to this club if they win promotion.
