Andrea Radrizzani dropped a transfer bomb this week when he revealed that he had held talks over bringing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Leeds United in January.
if that wasn’t enough he also said that he’d tried to contact Edinson Cavani over a shock Leeds move too.
It got Leeds fans talking and wondering what might have been.
However, in the interview, Radrizzani also admitted that he hadn’t talked to Marcelo Bielsa about either player as the talks hadn’t progressed far enough.
Talking in a Q&A on the Athletic on Wednesday evening, Leeds journalist Phil Hay was asked what he made of the huge transfer revelation.
“I doubt Ibrahimovic was ever coming here,” Hay said.
Pressed about what Bielsa would have made of having either player forced on him Hay said, “It’s hypothetical. I don’t see either of those players as realistic targets.”
Ibrahimovic moved on a free transfer to AC Milan in January instead of joining Leeds.
Radrizzani said that Zlatan was “honest” with him but said the talks were “concrete”.
It does beg the question, what would Marcelo Bielsa have made of it if Radrizzani had been successful?
Zlatan – as much as we love him – seems about as far removed from a Bielsa player in the Championship as we can imagine, even without going into his wages.
And the idea of him sitting on the bench while Bielsa started Patrick Bamford up top is delicious but as improbable as Man City making a comeback and winning the Premier League this season.
Radrizzani loves to drop the odd bomb in interviews – he sparked huge attention when he went on record to say a QSI takeover could propel Leeds into the same spending bracket as Man City.
Regardless, it was a wonderful story that brightened Leeds fans up in what is a bleak time.
