Phil Hay claims permanent Leeds United move for Joe Rodon now on the cards

Phil Hay has claimed a permanent move to Leeds United for Tottenham defender and current loanee Joe Rodon could be a possibility after his impressive Elland Road displays.

The Athletic journalist claimed a permanent deal is not unlikely, and will be very much on Daniel Farke’s mind as a player that would give the club an advantage if he was to stay beyond this season.

Hay also shared that when Leeds initially contacted Spurs over a move for the Welshman, they were given a £50million asking price, before negotiating the deal to take him on loan.

Speaking on The Square Ball podcast [9 November], Hay was asked whether a permanent move would be possible, and he shared: “I don’t think that’s at all unlikely. I don’t know about January, but I think at some point in the future. Given the way he’s played, he looks like a very steady addition.

“When Leeds first got in touch with Tottenham about him, they were told he would cost £50million, that was his asking price. Leeds said ‘Listen we just can’t do that, so thank you very much and goodbye’.

“Then Spurs got back in touch to say ‘Actually, you could just have him on loan for a season’.”

“I would have thought, the way he’s played so far, that he’ll be very much in Farke’s mind as someone who would be an advantage to keep beyond this season.”

The deal will have to work for all parties

Given the high-value Rodon is apparently held in at Tottenham, made clear by a frankly outrageous asking price delivered to Leeds in the summer, it is clear that any permanent move for the defender will need to be the right one for all parties.

Leeds will not want to spend silly money on any player if they can afford to avoid it, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is famously difficult to negotiate with when it comes to knock-down deals on his players.

If Rodon wants to make the permanent switch to Elland Road, something which is not out of the question given his impressive performances, fit for the style of play, and lack of opportunity at his parent club, it could be a deal which he pushes to make happen.

Were that the case, Leeds would likely be able to find a comfortable middle-ground to leave all parties satisfied, and that sort of deal could likely be on the cards, especially if the Whites earn promotion this season.

In other Leeds United news, the long-term future of another star player could still be at Elland Road.
