Phil Hay answers when asked if Leeds could sign Daniel Sturridge on free transfer

Daniel Sturridge’s release from Trabzonspor on Monday led to a number of Leeds United fans wondering whether the Whites should sign the former Liverpool striker on a free transfer.

Sturridge, 30, is a proven striker in the Premier League having scored 77 goals in 218 top-flight appearances while also earning 26 caps and scoring eight goals for England.

Leeds do not have the most prolific bunch of strikers in their squad and now that Sturridge is available for free, the question was asked whether the Yorkshire giants could sign him.

However, when asked, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay pointed out that the forward is banned until June for betting offences, which rules out an out-of-window move to Elland Road.

Sturridge hadn’t been in bad form in Turkey with Trabzonspor.

He scored seven goals and supplied four assists in 16 appearances across all competitions but – as usually is the case – he had suffered from a number of injuries with the Turkish club.

Now, his worldwide ban from playing football until June is underway and no one is going to be stupid enough to sign the 30-year-old before that ban is over.

Before news of the ban was shared, some Leeds fans would’ve been happy to see Sturridge head to Elland Road and here is a selection of their tweets:

If Sturridge was available to play then would he have made a good signing for the Whites?

Based on his goalscoring record? Yes.

Based on his injury record? Absolutely not.

Either way that doesn’t matter now as Sturridge will definitely not be signing for Leeds this season.
